Food Photography Props and Cooking Books

I'd like to confess. I have an addiction. I have a problem. Well... I actually have two problems and two addictions. One - cook books. Two - food photography props. I guess both of those things go hand in hand together. It's getting a little ridiculous because I literally don't have any more places in my condo to put any of these things. I mean I have a choice, I either buy more props and books or I have a comfortable place to sleep.

But the thing is that there are so many wonderful cook books that I'd like to have. I love just leafing through them during long dark winter evenings. I like discovering new recipes that I missed the first time around, I like remembering my favourite ones when I look through the books again and again. It's a journey through time. I look at the pictures and I remember what I was thinking and feeling the first time I looked at them. I remember how I felt when I cooked some of the things. It's my life, my love, my memories and I can't deny myself the pleasure of discovering new books, new recipes, new authors, new wonderful pictures. How can I?

And what about the props? I can't shoot food using the same plate over and over again. It's not even about using the same prop, it's about which foods go well with which dishes. Yes, I need different flat plates for salad and yes I need multiple bowls in different shapes and colours. I need all of them and more. Each time I go to a store, I see possibilities. This little dish would make a perfect creme brulee vessel. And this colourful bowl would go so well with risotto. And this... and this... Pictures form in my mind and dance around filling me with joy and eagerness to go home and cook and take pictures. Yes, I've never used this plate which I bought a year ago, but I will, of course, I will.

The pictures are terrible. It was overcast outside and it's quite dark in my apartment, and I had no choice but to use the internal flash. But if you'd like to see my food photography props, my cook books... my treasures, then

My book shelves

Cook Books

Cook Books

Cook Books

Cook Books

All of the books don't fit in there, so they are on top of another unit

Cook Books

To the left of it, there was a little space where I wanted to put some floor vase or a lamp or some kind of decoration, but it now has a lot of different rolls of papers for backgrounds. There are two levels of those rolls.

Food Photography Backgrounds

Also, I have more papers hanging on the door

Food Photography Backgrounds

To the right of the bookshelves, there's my desk. Underneath it I keep lots of my cooking magazines and some of my textiles used for backgrounds and napkins.

Food Photography Backgrounds

There's supposed to be a big 24 inch monitor on the desk, but I still haven't received it, so there are some props there right now. Don't know where to put them once the monitor arrives.

Food Photography Props

There's a small shelf above.

Food Photography Props

It's small, but long

Food Photography Props

And there's a lot of empty space on top of the bookcase and the desk unit. It's high, it's not really easy to get items from it, but it's empty. I mean it used to be empty.

Food Photography Props

And a little bit more of the ceiling shelf.

Food Photography Props

All those things were in my "office" and now let's go to my living room (yep, there's more).

In the living room I have another shelving unit dedicated to even more props.

More textiles, napkins and backgrounds.

Thank you, Dmitry :) I didn't realize I have so many things until today :)

I totally understand your diliemma. I'm almost in the same boat! I've been starting to pile on a lot of props. Too bad you aren't in NYC. We could trade some of our props! :)

Wow. You have more books than our book shops put together and the props are wonderful. I'm off to admire your photos now :)

I'm starting to accumulate lots of props, as well. If my husband comments on my cookbook collection, I will just send him to this post.. :)

Oh my gosh. This is exactly why I set rules about the photography on my blog! I just know I would turn into a raving obsessed lunatic. It looks like you have done a great job organizing your passion. Congratulations. I know I would not be so neat about it. So my rules are hand-held, point and shoot camera strictly with available light. I only use the dishes etc. that I actually own and use regularly. Otherwise this monster would take over my life. Thanks for helping me see my weaknesses through your strengths. Great job and so interesting. GREG

I told the hubby that I never want to hear him complaining about my measly little collection of maybe a dozen odd plates/bowls/saucers ever again after seeing your collection.

He rolled his eyes at me.

Jane (Recipe of the week), trading sounds like a wonderful idea. I wish I was in NYC as well.

Rox, thank you! But I still feel that it's not enough. I want more, more... :) haha

Jen Schall, yep, send your husband to this post. I'll be happy to help :) Because we neeeeeeed all those props!

Greg, wow, you have wonderful pictures with just point and shoot? I am impressed! Well, I don't think it's my strength, it's really an addiction because it's never enough. I am afraid I might need to move into a bigger place if I don't stop.

Wolf, your husband shouldn't complain about just a dozen of plates. As a therapy, show him this post one a month or so :)

I think we are long lost twins, LOL. I have recipes book all over my apartment and props OMG! I need another room to put all of it.
But I love it and can't resist when I see a cute bowl. And sometimes I scold my hubby for actually use my bowls and pretty plates.

Hi Anna, my long lost twin :) Maybe you could also do a post on props and cook books, it would be very interesting to see what other bloggers have and use

Looking at your pictures, it's not hard to understand why you have all that stuff. Your pictures are gorgeous! And I'm really impressed with how clean and new your cookbooks look. Mine have ripped covers, stained pages and I write all over them, but yours look picture-worthy.

Great post.

Sue, thank you very much for the compliments about my pictures :) Well, the covers of my cookbooks are ok, but they also have stains inside them. I actually like cookbooks with stains, I feel that they have character :)

You are sooo funny. I feel that I am beginning to go in that direction...I am just starting though but the other day my husband said "what is this black plate for?" I told him, then I saw him using it and I found myself saying "you are using the plate?" Looking at your collection, I better get shopping! Thanks for the inspiration!
Penny posted on Jun 16, 2009 at 22:00
Hi Penny, wow, how could he use that plate? unacceptable :) haha. No, jokes aside, I totally understand you. Good luck with shopping and getting your collection bigger. Stop by again!

Although I'm new at food blogging, I started collecting sets of 12 (little plates, bowls and glasses, and various platters and trays) for for our Summer Concert in the Park Culinary Challenges. All of these have now come in quite handy for the blog, continue to be used for our elaborate Concert in the Park set up, and recently gave me the perfect excuse to buy a beautiful Tuscan farmhouse-style sideboard/buffet to store some of the pieces! I've also been thinking about doing a blog post on my collection and just received a beautiful set of triangular copper plates (see the recent Shrimp Gyoza post) and a matching copper bowl I'm dying to reveal!

Hi Denise, yes, any excuse to buy more dishes is a good excuse :) And those copper plates are absolutely adorable, I haven't seen anything like it in the stores here. Very cool!
Julia posted on Jun 22, 2009 at 11:07
I love how you have your textiles stored. Great idea!
You are not alone in this addiction, if that makes you feel any better :)
Kristen posted on Jul 08, 2009 at 15:28
Kristen, thanks :) It does make me feel better :) I changed the way I store my backgrounds, I put them in a deep drawer, not sure which way I like best yet.

I feel better now. I have tons of cookbooks. I'm just starting my collection of props now. The other day I bought a bag full of forks, knives etc at the thrift store. The lady was looking at me kind of weird because nothing matched.
Hélène posted on Jul 29, 2009 at 01:53
Helene, I so envy you about the forks and knives, I definately need more of those. I went to a thrift store a couple of days ago and saw a bag of mismatched cutlery, but decided against it, now I wish I bought it.
Julia posted on Jul 30, 2009 at 09:35
There is so much you can do with cutlery. Was a great deal at 10 cents a piece.
Hélène posted on Jul 30, 2009 at 16:00
Helene, now I feel bad for not buying any cutlery at that thrift store. I should go back there :)
Julia posted on Jul 30, 2009 at 23:57
Wow, you do have a lot of cookbooks and props. I started buying a few pieces of bowls, plates and table mats yesterday because they're on sale. But I think I would have to go back because they're really cheap. I love your photos and I'm a newbie in photography. More or less, it's all about trial and error for me. Glad to have found your blog. Cheers, Divina

Wow! That's simply an amazing collection. It inspires me to start my own collection. I've always had a difficulty taking nice photos with the limited amount of stuff I have. Nice!

This is amazing... I want this office/studio/stuff!!!! :) I really like the idea of having different fabrics for backgrounds and stuff... Brilliant!
And that is a LOT of cookbooks... :)
Nikki posted on Jun 17, 2010 at 12:51
Wow.. I am impressed and envious at the same time.. wish we live nearby so I could borrow some of your props (love the fabrics) for my photo shoots!!

I recently bought quite a number of plates for this purpose and thought I was becoming a lunatic but you just made me feel so much better ;-)
Tina posted on Jul 01, 2010 at 12:02
That was my collection over a year ago... It has grown!! It's actually quite unmanagable now and I stopped buying props. I wish there were people in my area who I could swap props with, it would be fun.
Julia posted on Jul 02, 2010 at 10:29
I want a prop room for myself now!! You have amazing collection of props and books!
Parita posted on Jul 10, 2010 at 07:26
I hopped here from other site. You made me feel normal. I just playing around with a camera and am a total newbie in taking pictures. I myself have collected more than I can afford spacewise. If you bought all of these paying full price, I should say hats off to you since I cannot spend money on these things. All I have accumulated are from garage sales or from thrift stores. You have beautiful pictures here.
