How long does it actually take to make Instant Pot Tomato Orzo Soup
If you’ve been following Imagelicious for a while, then you know I have a pet peeve when Instant Pot recipes claim that they are done in just a few minutes when in reality electric pressure cooker takes time to come to pressure and release the pressure.
I’ve read too many posts on various Facebook groups when people complain that their family had to eat dinner an hour later because they expected food to be cooked in 20 minutes and it turned out that it was actually an hour. So, I always talk about how long it actually takes to cook a recipe in Instant Pot.
So, for this Instant Pot Tomato Orzo Soup, let’s say it’s 5 minutes to measure out all the ingredients and add them to Instant Pot, and then it takes about 15 minutes to come to pressure, 1 minute cooking time, and 3 minutes to release the pressure. Let’s add another minute for mixing in the cheese. From start to finish this Tomato Orzo Soup can be done in 25 minutes!

Ingredients, substitutions, variations for Instant Pot Tomato Orzo Soup
- Mutti Whole Peeled Tomatoes (Pelati)
- I like using Mutti Whole Peeled Tomatoes (Pelati) because I like a little bit of texture in this Tomato Orzo Soup
- If you prefer smoother soup, then use 2 cans of Mutti Finely Chopped Tomatoes (Polpa) instead of 1 can of Mutti Whole Peeled Tomatoes (Pelati). So, you’d be using 3 cans of Mutti Finely Chopped Tomatoes (Polpa) for this whole recipe
- Parmigiano-Reggiano
- Parmigiano-Reggiano is expensive but with minimal ingredients, each component matters!! You also don’t use a lot of it
- You can use Grana padano instead
- Milk
- Lots of Instant Pot users are adamant about not cooking milk in Instant Pot. I, however, cook milk in my electric pressure cooker all the time with no issues, for example, my Instant Pot Hot Chocolate is mostly just milk
- If you are worried about cooking milk in Instant Pot, then you can add it after the soup is cooked
- Seasonings
- I am not a big fan of basil so I don’t use it usually in my cooking but feel free to use dried basil instead of oregano or thyme
- Adjust garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper to your taste
- You can use a blend of Italian herbs if you’d like
- You can add some paprika
- Feel free to add chili powder or cayenne pepper
- I use Better Than Bouillon to make stock almost 100% in my cooking but you can use homemade stock instead of water
- Vegetables
- OPTIONALLY if you have a few extra minutes, sauté one diced onion, two minced garlic cloves, and one chopped pepper in a mixture of one tablespoon of olive oil and one table spoon of butter for about 5-7 minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients.

I had to have a tooth extracted yesterday (due to it being cracked), and was looking for a comfort soup. I absolutely love tomato orzo soup, and this was perfect. I used almond milk, and two cans of diced tomatoes (because that’s what I had), and it was delicious! Thank you! I will definitely make again.

Followed to the letter and got “burn.” Advice?
Julia says
Some models give burn notice with no reason whatsoever unfortunately. Not much advice as I’ve never gotten a burn notice with this soup or any other recipes. Perhaps increase the amount of water/broth?
Covey says
What size are cans of tomatoes? 14 ounce, 28 ounce.?
Julia says
I just checked and it’s 13 ounce and 26 ounce cans. So, I’m sure you can use 14 and 28 ounce cans if that is what you have
